Imaginary Friends
Do you remember having an imaginary friend growing up? Many children do and they usually talk about this friend until the age of 6 or 7.
My granddaughter started talking about her friend, Brenda, when she was just 3 years old. She would talk about Brenda in a very natural way, saying things like … ‘Brenda wants to come with us for ice cream. Can she come?’
My daughter was always very matter of fact about it and would assure her with an ‘of course she can come.’
Many children, before the age of 7, are very connected with the non-visible world and just because we cannot see, hear or feel what they are experiencing, doesn’t mean it isn’t real for them.
During one of my granddaughter’s visits around the age of 6, I asked her about Brenda and her response was ‘Oh, she moved to Minneapolis.’ And that was the last time she ever mentioned her friend, Brenda.
I believe each one of us comes into this lifetime with a spirit guide and when our children are young, they are very much connected and can see their spirit guide. We might think it’s an imaginary friend but for them, they are very real.
Over the years, I have met many people who shared seeing their spirit guide when they were little and the response that came back was something like ‘Oh, stop being so foolish’ or ‘Imaginary friends aren’t real’ or ‘It’s just your imagination’. As a child, we trust the adults around us, assuming they know more than we do, of course, so we close that door on our imaginary friend. The friend doesn’t go away but we stop being open to them, along with their wisdom and support.
I encourage you to listen to your children and grandchildren and to what they are sharing with you. Please believe them when they begin talking about their friends who you don’t see and believe it is real for them.
Knowing your spirit guide is always with you, you can even begin connecting with them again. It may seem foolish at first, but start talking with them. You can ask them for some support in a difficult situation, share your joy with them and simply have conversations with them. Many have started journaling and sharing their daily lives with them. Once you begin opening the channels of communication, you may be surprised at what comes back to you through dreams or inspiration.
