The Legend of Bagger Vance is a movie that beautifully depicts our soul’s journey to mastery. Bagger Vance is a teacher who doesn’t fit the normal description of a teacher. He arrives on the scene just as our main character is ready to make a choice of whether to stay in the dark place he has found himself or to uplift himself to something beyond.
The movie is about a golfer and the game of golf, but it is so much more than that. It reflects our own journey from despair to doubt to arrogance and finally to self- mastery. It perfectly shows those times in our life when it would have been easy to give up and the courage it takes to keep going.
There are many different aspects of self-mastery and the first step is to know we are not on this journey alone.
When the student is ready, the master will appear.
Sometimes the master is not who we think they would be or should be. Bagger Vance, played by Will Smith, is the unlikely master who appears for Rannulph Junuh, played by Matt Damon.
I love movies that show the transformation of the character(s) and this is one of my top favorites.
